Catholic Radio is coming to Boston, Massachusetts

Buffalo, New York – July 12, 2010 - Holy Family Communications, a New York Corporation, and its President Jim Wright, are pleased to announce the agreement to purchase WBIX 1060AM in Boston, Massachusetts. The Station of the Cross Catholic Radio Network, a division of Holy Family Communications, will broadcast to a population of over 5.5 million. With our new upgrade, this 50,000-watt signal will become the largest market served by the Station of the Cross Catholic Radio Network. As of 7-13-10, Holy Family Communications has secured a new FCC call sign WQOM (Queen of Martyrs) to replace the current call sign WBIX.

Jim Wright, acknowledged, “We are very excited about bringing Catholic radio to the Boston community.  We feel truly blessed by the acquisition of WBIX 1060AM and the gift it is to broadcast the fullness of Truth with clarity and charity with our Catholic radio programming.” Alex Langer, President of WBIX Corporation stated, “I am pleased to welcome Holy Family Communications to the City of Boston.” The station expects to be fully operational by November 1, 2010, and is currently soliciting donations to meet their budgetary needs.

Scot Landry, the Secretary for Catholic Media for the Archdiocese of Boston stated, “Cardinal Seán O’Malley and many of us at the Archdiocese have prayed for years to have a strong Catholic radio presence here.  As you know, Boston has been one of the only major media markets without 24/7 Catholic radio.  The programming that will run has been proven nationally, and we are happy that Catholics in Boston now will be able to listen to it.”

The focus of the Station of the Cross Catholic Radio Network is to broadcast excellent programming from the combination of national shows from EWTN, The Global Catholic Radio Network, along with local productions (daily masses, recitation of the Rosary, holy hours, and devotions) that are filling a hunger within the souls of listeners.

Holy Family Communications is a 501-c-3 non-for-profit Catholic radio apostolate whose mission it is to effectively evangelize through radio programming, new media, and community action. The Network proclaims the Truth revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, handed down by the Holy Spirit through the Magisterium, and laid out in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

In the mid 1990’s, while visiting the monastery at EWTN, Mother Angelica, Foundress of EWTN, asked Jim and Joanne Wright and Mary Ellen Capece to return home to Buffalo and start a Catholic radio apostolate.  Jim, Joanne, and Mary Ellen lacked radio or media experience; however, after prayerful discernment, The Station of the Cross began their journey to bring Catholic radio to Western New York.

After overcoming a number of challenges, The Station of the Cross began broadcasting as WLOF 101.7 FM Buffalo on August 15, 1999, and is dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. WHIC 1460 AM Rochester began broadcasting on July 1, 2003.  WHIC is dedicated to Our Lady’s Holy and Immaculate Conception.  The Station of the Cross Catholic Radio Network broadcasts quality Catholic programming 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition to all of the rewards of an on-air radio presence, Holy Family

Communications brings with it a support staff of dynamic, faithful individuals with the expertise and knowledge to successfully run a radio network. They are devoted to their faith and to dispelling doubt. In the ten years that HFC has been on the air in answer to the wishes of Mother Angelica, the network is always fine-tuning their operation which allows them to provide excellence in programming and community action.

The lives of listeners are transforming every day. As a result of listening to Catholic radio listeners become:

  • More active in learning the true teaching of the Faith
  • More prayerful and committed to the Faith
  • Energized by hearing the Truth
  • Involved in parishes in positions of leadership
  • Positively engaged with family and friends on topics of debate
  • More giving in tithing to the Church

This radio apostolate sponsors the most compelling speakers for all listeners, including conferences with Father John Corapi, Dr. Scott Hahn, Johnnette Benkovic, Jesse Romero, and Dr. Ray Guarendi. As part of Theology On Tap Buffalo, The Station of the Cross also brings in extraordinary speakers to address the needs of young adults in their 20’s and 30’s.  Station interactive Web sites stream the signal live, and it enables users to access programming 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through out the world. Listeners can hear and view the most current headlines from a Catholic point of view. Users can also listen to podcasts, familiarize themselves with upcoming events, get the latest in programming updates, and much more. In June, HFC released iCatholicRadio, an application for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, as they continue to reach listeners through a wide variety of media. The monthly newsletter features articles written by clergy from the listening area, provides information about the current events, updates readers about changes at the station, and provides a program grid for easy access to the daily broadcast schedule.

This station is in the hands of God. Its vision is to allow Him to work through them in obedience as a Catholic radio apostolate. With His grace, they place this vision under the mantle of the Blessed Mother, consecrating all their efforts toward His greater glory and the salvation of souls. He will touch hearts and bring conversions through the truths being broadcast 24/7. The goal is to reach as many people as possible in order to bring the thousands back to their parishes with a renewed love for their Catholic Faith.
